MONTANTE
SYMPOSIUM

08. - 09. 12. 2018

A gathering for all big swords enthusiasts.
Montante, Schlachtschwert, Spadone, Great sword, Mangual and more.

7

places are available. The total number of participants is limited to 50.

THE EVENT

In North Rhine-Westphalia, between Dortmund and Hanover in the city of Bielefeld, right in the heart of the Teutoburg Forest, takes place the first Montante Symposium in Germany on the 8th and 9th of December 2018. For the first time in this format and therefore maybe not perfect yet. We train Saturday and Sunday in two, 50m apart, sports halls. Training, lectures, sparring and an experimental tournament. More over Bielefeld.

THE WEAPONS

This event is about large, two-handed swords that are called Montante, Spadone, Great Sword, Zweihänder or Schlachtschwert. In addition, the following weapons are presented or trained also: the flail (Mangual) and the ambidextrous double swords of Godinho, their handling are closely related to the Montante. For detailled information we recommend the article by Ton Puey on HROARR: "IBERIAN MONTANTE"

THE TOURNAMENT

We are working on some ideas and rules. As an experimental tournament should here the exchange of experience and fun in the foreground, not winning anything. It should not be about Montante versus Montante. More about situations from historical sources: one against many. But safety will play a big role here. we will act with appropriate simulators and concentration. More information will follow.

THE HOST

The non-profit organization Drey Wunder has been training historical fencing in Bielefeld since 2011. We train almost all weapons of the era and for about 4 years also Montante. We organize tournaments and seminars and also research with modern technologies, such as motion capturing. From one of our most popular seminars the "Zweihändertag" we developed the idea for this symposium.

WEAPONS TO BORROW

Please bring your own weapons. If available. But if you do not have own weapons at all, we can provide weapons in limited numbers (first come, first serve!) The rental weapons are mainly made of wood or PVC and cost you just a smile.  If necessary, an approximately 170cm long stick is sufficient enough. Or you buy a Montante until december. If you have questions about weapons just contact us.

MORE IMPORTANTLY

You are insured during the symposium. Even as a non-member of our association you as a participant in our seminars are comprehensively insured by our ARAG non-membership insurance. The minimum age is 18 years. Participation is ONLY possible with a signed training and seminar conditions. You can find our seminar condition here. BONNER SCHULE - MONTANTERO BONN (deu)

I started classically with Jiu-Jitsu a little more than a quarter of a century ago, which I did for a good 20 years until the 2nd Dan. After rather short trips to Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do, I have been dealing with HEMA since about 2006/2007. Focus here is the long sword and the short sword to fight for the early sources of Liechtenauer environment. Since 2009, I have also been dealing with the Iberian Montante as a further focus, in particular with the earlier Spanish sources of Esgrima común. For the last 2 years, my focus is ultimately on the montante.
